Civil law is that branch of the law that deals with private disputes between individual entities that may be heard in a court of law. It covers such matters such as tort law, contract law, employment law and many others. It excludes criminal law, which is court actions with respect to actions by the state against an individual, and administrative law, which is the branch of law dealing with tribunals that are not under the control of a judge.
